Designed to both lift and lower loaded pallets from storage spaces that are high is a narrow aisle forklift. This particular type is suitable for work environments with narrow spaces between aisles, like for instance warehouses or retail environments. The forklift has solid rubber, small tires that make maneuvering really simple.

Normally, the operator of this particular kind of forklift stands up in a small cockpit. The stand-up design enables the narrow aisle forklift to be as narrow ans short as possible. A stand-up cockpit forklift normally has three tires: one in the back, and two in the front. This design enables for easy and fast maneuvering. There are some versions of these forklifts that are available with a sit-down cockpit. The lift attachment is capable of pivoting to the sides, allowing the lift to be operated without the operator having to reposition the entire machine. The sit-down version generally has four wheels.

Many narrow aisle forklifts are powered by an electric engine. Machines that are electrically powered do not produce exhaust fumes and are quiet, making them the preferred alternative for closed areas like retail spaces. Some lifts come with a gas engine or a diesel engine. Nevertheless, the diesel model is not suggested to be used indoors as it could produce exhaust and be quite noisy.
