Lift Truck Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety procedures must always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is very essential to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is vital for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place should be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station should not be obstructed and an injured employee must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When near a battery and charging area, open fire are not allowed. Never allow objects like for example lighters or matches to be utilized when an employee is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be well ventilated. The recharging method could cause fumes to be released. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
