A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machinery which is quite like a forklift. It enables the operator to utilize forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some things, and this feature is something the forklift does not provide. Normally, order pickers are operated by electricity. These kind of equipment are mainly used in a warehouse environment. Usually they are used for transporting pallets and finishing certain jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The operator of an order picker uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting which usually sits quite close to the ground. The operator could direct the machinery to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. As soon as the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades could be raised to the required level that makes it convenient for the operator. Like for example, if the materials needed, are situated on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then whole platform is capable of being lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, however, several companies might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker is also able to put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be used to finish these particular tasks at some companies instead.
