Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started during the year 1919. The company was originally founded by Anton Raky, an engineer. Raky was a pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The initial name of the company was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
The cornerstone for SMAG was laid during the year 1937, when the Salzgitter Group bought a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling machines. In the year 1986, the company purchased the grab product division from Peiner AG. Immediately after, Peiner was developed into a global brand name in the following years.
