Regular inspections could really help to reduce forklift repairs and save you numerous amounts of money eventually. The standing joke in the business is a forklift technician coining the saying "Pay me now, or pay me later," since it normally costs more to procrastinate when it comes to forklifts. For example, the minor fixes that are not repaired can eventually turn into expensive repairs.
Tilt Cylinders
If they are not checked, oil leaks are a very serious issues. On a regular basis, the machinery should be inspected for damage and/or oil leaks. Oil leaks can lead to really dangerous uncontrolled movement of the mast. Whether the leaks are inside of the cylinder or outside, the end result could lead to loss of vital fluid and cylinder drift. When leaks or damage are detected, you usually would have to replace the seals or the complete cylinder assembly.
Chains
You don't want mast lift chains to stretch beyond acceptable limits, so pay attention and look carefully for any signs of wear and tear or damage. Frequently check a chain wear gauge in order to monitor the wear. If the chain is worn beyond 2% or rusted, it is time to replace the chain. Following these guidelines would help keep your equipment functioning optimally.
Mast
When using the lift control lever, the mast needs to be moved down and up smoothly, making sure to check if the mast is moving smoothly backwards and forwards. You might have to lubricate the mast strip sliding surfaces if the sliding surfaces are binding. Lubricate their fittings also, as there is a fitting located on either side of the inner mast. The lift bracket side rollers are one more lubrication spot.
Forks
The tines have to be inspected for cracks, damage and wear since cracked or worn forks can fail with out any warnings. Any fork damage of course means immediately taking the truck out of service. If the cracks are deeper than just on the surface, they need to be replaced because they really can't be safely repaired.
